![]() I like to keep the triangluar fold together as I scrunch so that the “sunburst” pattern can be seen even in the scrunched part of the shirt. ![]() Try to keep the scrunches even to avoid big blotches of color or white in the final design. Once the mandala is all tied scrunch up the rest of the t-shirt and hold in place with the thread of with elastics. The wraps can either touch or not (see the below picture where the first two wraps do not touch and the second two do to see what I mean). You can vary the angle of the wrapping and the distance between the wraps to make many interesting lines. Move up the triangle a bit and begin wrapping. The more times you wrap the thread the thicker the mandala design lines will be on the t-shirt. Make a slip knot and loop it around the point of the triangle. You can make your own waxed thread or just use any regular sting as long as you pull it tight. I like to use waxed thread* (which I use for bookbinding) because the wax helps keep the dye off the tied spots and makes it easier to pull super tight. You will also need some scissors and string. Since the triangle is the start for lots of tie dye projects I have the instructions for it on its own page. Read more about the companies I work with here. This is how I cover the cost of running a website and can continue to create content. This means if you purchase a product through one of the links with an asterisk (*) I will get a small commission at no extra cost to you. This makes a t-shirt that is not too flashy while still being a beautiful impressive work of art. This design is a simplified version that uses only two colors, simplifies the tying process, and uses beginner-friendly Rit dyes* so that you can learn all the basic skills to do a more complicated design but still get an awesome result on your first try.īecause of the limited colors and simple mandala, this design is a subdued version of the often intricate colorful tie dye mandalas. Tie a tight knot and cut off the remaining string.Mandala tie dye is one of the designs that look super impressive but are actually quite easy. Continue tightly wrapping the string a few times around each line of the zigzag until you reach the point. You’ll want to make it as tight as possible so you’ll have a very defined mandala pattern line after dyeing. Now it’s time to bind your fabric with your wax string! Wrap the string around your largest zigzag line (should be the point opposite the tip of the fabric) and tie a tight knot in the string. Draw a zigzag line from this point up to the other edge pointed away from you, and back down to the bottom fold, repeating until you reach the narrow tip of the folded fabric.įlip the folded fabric over and repeat drawing zigzags on the other side that match with/align with the lines you drew on the opposite side. ![]() Using a washable marker, start at the bottom edge of the folded fabric closest to you, at the point where the sleeve is noted in the step above. This will be the point you start at when creating your zigzag guidelines for binding the fabric. Lift your folded fabric slightly to determine where the edge of the sleeve is within the folds. You should be folding the bottom layer back towards your left-hand side in the opposite direction. Carefully flip the shirt over, keeping your triangle folds intact (which should now be on the bottom), and repeat this triangle folding process on the other half of the shirt. Repeat this same fold once more with the top layer to make a narrower triangle. ![]() This should form a triangle shape with your top layer. Do this by grabbing the bottom edge of your shirt (which is now at the bottom left corner on your left-hand side), and folding it over to the top right-hand side corner as shown. Make sure your fabric layers are smooth, then fold the top layer of your folded shirt over into a triangle shape. Determine where the bottom of the sleeve is and fold the shirt in half again at this point, folding the bottom edge up towards the collar. Pull up the top layer of your damp T-shirt from the middle of the collar and the same point on the bottom edge and fold the shirt in half vertically.
